Chick-Fil-A Insists Drive Thru Part Of Corporate Character
Five Points () – The Birmingham Design Review Committee on Wednesday rejected plans presented by Chick-Fil-A for a full service location with drive-through in the Five Points neighborhood. During their presentation before the committee, representatives from the company showed detailed elevations of the proposed restaurant including signage and the company’s emblematic drive-through. “We demonstrated how the drive-through is part of our corporate culture and identity,” said company spokesman Ashleigh Knight. “We could not imagine a design without a drive-through that would be in keeping with the historic nature of our company.”

The company has always been about quick service with a smile. Long before KFC created the chicken-bowl, former employees at the Ford plant in Hapeville Georgia could walk into the original Dwarf House restaurant and order a hot-brown to go. "We had to be at work by 5 AM," said pipe-fitter JT Rawls. "Verna would always have mine ready behind the counter when I drove up at 4:30." That fast service and attention to customers' needs gave rise to the company's first full-service drive-through in 1986. "We may not have created the drive-through," said Knight, "but we certainly made it quicker."

“We did for drive-through service what we did for raising chicken," said founder S. Truett Cathy. "We reduced the amount of time it takes." "The character of our restaurant would be significantly affected by the omission of our drive-through," said Knight. "Quick boneless chicken service is part of our corporate culture and the culture of America. And I'm fairly sure Five Points is part of America."

Chick-Fil-A was founded in Atlanta in 1946 and is credited with the invention of the boneless breast of chicken sandwich. In 1986 they introduced the concept of high-traffic boneless breast of chicken service with drive-through. “Quick, quality service is in our blood,” said Cathy. “And in our boneless chicken.”

When asked about the walk-in Chick-Fil-A location on Fifth Avenue North, Knight said he was unaware of such an urban style location. Further research revealed that in fact the location is merely a satellite of the Wildwood store where extra food is sent each day. “As God as my witness, we do not operate restaurants without a drive-through,” said founder S. Truett Cathy. “Well, accept for our mall locations.”

Following the rejection of their revised plan for a southside location, Chick-Fil-A appealed the decision to a secret board for reconsideration.
